The centre of old Heslach
Bihlplatz forms the original centre of Heslach. Up to the beginning of the 19th century, Heslach was a purely agricultural hamlet where wine was predominantly grown. A boom began in the 19th century with the development of crafts and industrial facilities (tannery, bleach works, brewery, brickworks, iron foundry, several tricot factories, cardboard box factory...). This original village character can still be traced around Bihlplatz. Time seems to have stood still in the alleyways between the ‘Ritterstüble’ run by the ‘Kulturverein Heslach e. V.’ and the ‘Theater am Faden’ puppet theatre - here you can sense the old village character of Heslach.
This square is named after the architect Georg Friedrich Bihl, who also built the Linden Museum. The ox fountain on Bihlplatz is also a reminder of Heslach's village character. In the past, the oxen of the farmers from the neighbouring communities were actually watered here. On Saturdays, a weekly market is held on the square. Every year, the legendary Heslacher Hocketse takes place on Bihlplatz. Naturally, the ‘village of Heslach’ also included a village pub. The Ochsen has been this for most people in Heslach since 1839, making it the oldest pub in the village today. Right diagonally opposite is the Heslacher Weinstube - with more than a hundred years of Swabian culinary tradition.
