Idyll among the vines
Behind the new Marienhospital building, the Schimmelhüttenweg climbs steeply up to Degerloch. On this romantic path, walkers enter an almost Mediterranean-like landscape. One of the steepest vineyards in Stuttgart is located here - the Degerlocher Scharrenberg. Its steep vineyard terraces with their clayey loam soils facing south-west are ideal for storing the sun's heat. Between the imposing stone walls, walkers will find warmth-loving flora.
The first documented mention of viticulture in Stuttgart dates back to the year 708, imported from Roman civilisation. Throughout the Middle Ages and into the first half of the 19th century, viticulture characterised Stuttgart's economic structure. Its importance only declined with the onset of industrialisation and with it the majority of the vineyards disappeared. All the better that there are still natural idylls such as the Scharrenberg between high-tech and the internet, where the noise of the big city remains far behind in the valley. We highly recommend the annual wine hike through the individual vineyards of the Scharrenberg - a unique opportunity to experience the wine culture of Stuttgart's south "live".
