Städtisches Lapidarium

Stones tell stories of the past

Designed in 1905 as a private park by Karl von Ostertag-Siegle modelled on an Italian Renaissance garden, this site already housed a collection of Roman fragments at the time. In 1950, when the state capital of Stuttgart acquired the garden, the Städtisches Lapidarium was created here. Nowadays, it offers visitors a particularly fascinating insight into the architectural and cultural history of the state capital. It is a special feature within Stuttgart's museum landscape: on the one hand a historical park, on the other an open-air museum, a kind of ‘stone picture book’ of the city's history. Besides providing information about sections of Stuttgart's architectural and cultural history, this place is enchanting due to the tranquillity, perhaps even sentimentality, of the silent stone witnesses. Located in the south of Stuttgart, this publicly accessible open-air museum with its terraces, a fountain courtyard and old trees is a place for meditation. Nowadays, the walkway, the terraces, the fountain courtyard and the old trees invite you to forget time and immerse yourself in Stuttgart's city history.
