The Heslach Cathedral
The “Cathedral of Heslach”, St. Matthew's Church, was built between 1876 and 1881 according to plans by city planning officer Adolf Wolff. This was Stuttgart's first neo-romantic sacred building. However, St. Matthew's Church is not an exact copy of a Romanesque building, but rather a Gothic sacred building in Romanesque forms in its overall concept. The style is based on the Romanesque style, but with a very bright, already Gothic-looking interior.
Looking at the church from Möhringer Strasse, it looks particularly imposing. The impressive choir section with its arched gallery and the flanking stair towers stand exactly on the axis of Möhringer Strasse. Depending on the time of day and the daylight, the sacred building never looks the same. The numerous and varied organ concerts also make the Matthäuskirche a cultural meeting place. The 44-metre-high dome and the tower were particularly striking. The latter still rises a proud 65 meters into the sky today.
